GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide have transformed weight loss, but they’re not a magic fix. If you’re taking one of these medications and not seeing the progress you expected, small adjustments could make a big difference.
Here’s how to maximize your results while on GLP-1s.
1. Prioritize Protein
GLP-1s reduce appetite, which is great—but if you’re not eating enough protein, you may lose muscle along with fat. Muscle is crucial for keeping your metabolism high and preventing weight regain. Aim for at least 30 grams of protein per meal from sources like chicken, fish, eggs, tofu, or legumes.
2. Strength Training is Key
Losing weight isn’t just about the number on the scale—it’s about body composition. Strength training helps preserve lean muscle mass, which boosts metabolism and keeps your weight loss sustainable. If you’re only doing cardio, consider adding resistance training 2-3 times per week.
3. Stay Consistent with Your Medication
Skipping doses or taking your medication inconsistently can slow progress. If you’ve missed a dose or are unsure about your schedule, check in with me to make sure your treatment is optimized.
4. Hydration Matters More Than You Think
Dehydration can mimic hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking. Plus, proper hydration supports fat metabolism. Aim for at least 8-10 cups of water per day, and try adding lemon or electrolyte drops if plain water feels boring.
5. Sleep & Stress Play a Bigger Role Than You Realize
Poor sleep and chronic stress can increase cravings, slow metabolism, and make weight loss harder. Prioritize 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night and incorporate stress-management techniques like deep breathing, yoga, or short walks outside.
